Here is my story …
There was definitely a “game changer” moment for me early on in my career!
I started working in the non-profit sector as an Executive Assistant at the Canadian Beverage Association and soon supported the President & CEO, Paulette Vinette. Paulette continues to be an Association Sector Icon in Canada and was the first and most influential mentor of my career. I learned by example the vital importance of the non-profit sector, the need to become involved in one’s professional association and the requirement to give back.
Working with Paulette exposed me to the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential. In 2003, I proudly earned this internationally recognized designation built on competencies that demonstrate the essential skills of efficient and effective, non-profit management.
Advancing my career through numerous promotions resulted in earning a place on the Senior Management Team at FP Canada (formerly Financial Planning Standards Council) as Director, Corporate Services, then as Vice President, Operations. While at FP Canada for my 13 year tenure, I also served as Corporate Secretary to the Board of Directors and was instrumental in bringing the organization's governance infrastructure to an enviable level of excellence.
Continuing to grow, I became Executive Director of the Canadian Security Association, where I worked with the National Board of Directors on implementing and furthering their new strategic plan.
In 2018, I hung up my executive hat and formed Pinpoint Governance Group, a dynamic consulting firm specializing in developing and refining governance policies and processes for non-profits. I am thrilled to be supporting the non-profit sector in this different capacity, helping clients to mitigate risk by strengthening their governance programs.
Not only am I a natural collaborator passionate about policy writing, but I bring a unique lens to my work as I have been involved with essentially every layer and role within the non-profit sector. This enables me to identify and recognize challenges on every level and to understand the intricacies that are the foundation of any successful non-profit.
As a long-time member of the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE), I serve on the Program Development Committee for the Association’s Trillium Chapter, and on the Governance Committee for CSAE National. In addition, I am proud to serve on the Board of Directors and Governance Committee of the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto.
I am a passionate, goal-oriented, lifelong earner and earned a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Management (Phase One of EMBA Program) with Athabasca University in March 2018. As a budding author, I was honoured to have my most recent articles featured in CSAE Trillium Chapter’s Forum Magazine and on Imagine Canada’s online blog.
I would love to make a connection and continue the story!
Yours in good governance,
Heather Terrence, CAE
